The Central Intelligence Agency was established in 1947 via the National Security Act; 1949 legislation exempted it from most Congressional oversight, freeing the agency to conduct increasingly high-stakes operations during the Cold War. The CIA conducted several international coups over the years, overthrowing governments in Iran, Chile, and Guatemala; it has driven the War on Terror post-9/11 and been accused of any number of political assassinations, drug running, and torture.
